43 Courts
The client brief was a medium density row housing development in a 2 acre site on the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). Our design intent was to explore how the necessary density can be achieved retaining porosity. 3 types of row houses were arrived at, where each type is organised around a court at various levels of the house at ground, first and second floor. The courts allow the necessary porosity and bring in the luxury of an independent house even on a limited budget. The variety in the housing types is formed through permutation of the types, while the common open spaces on the front help to break up the monotony of a typical row house development.
