The client brief for this project called for the articulation of the terrace of an apartment into a service area and recreation space… the one defining demand being that the client be able to ‘see the sky at all times’. The design exercise therefore treated the terrace to be a floor plane with the sky as its roof. The new space that emerged out of the exercise is split on 3 levels with the larger level difference being bridged by a spiral staircase cast on site. The 1st level accommodates a generic open space and the service area, the 2nd level a basketball ring and the 3rd level works as an amateur star gazing platform. Materials were selected to achieve a diversity of characteristics such as openness, transparency and enclosure. A mix of translucent and transparent polycarbonate sheets used as wall and roof panels worked well to conceal the services in their space and open up other portions as required. Light fixtures inset within the roof panels produce a diffused moonlit effect during the night and transform the terrace into an intimate party space for the family and their friends. On the 2nd and 3rd level, chain link fences simultaneously define the enclosures and openness of the basketball ring and star gazing platform.
