House for two Brothers now

House for two Brothers now

Chennai, India.  2009 – 2011

PROGRAM: Residential
CLIENT: Santappa Kaliyan and Family
STATUS: Completed
AREA: 1775 sft

This project was started as an alternative and immediate requirement for a proposed House for 2 Brothers in the late 2007. This house was to be an extension of the old parent’s house on a 40’x 120’ site, hence is conceived as a plug in with a 2 bed 2 bath unit of 1250sft. The extension is designed as a stack of boxes that both deliberately offsets from the old building at ground level and gestures to overlap at the first level. Entry from the old building is bifurcated through a corridor to access the lower level and a folded sheet metal stair to access the upper level.  Lower level corridor ends in a transparent dining room enclosed in a jalli wall while the corridor extends access to kitchen and bedroom. The upper level houses a living room with an extended terrace that overlooks the garden, and a bedroom with a private balcony
